Democrats vs. Who Exactly?
Fending off while fighting on
Overall, around 26% of Americans describe themselves as "liberal" or "very liberal," and another 32% describe themselves as "moderate." 33% describe themselves as "conservative" or "very conservative. (YouGov)
I got out of bed cataloguing the local bridges that can be blown to save us from the federal government, and knew it was time to write.
Highway 36, the winding two-lane deathtrap that connects our little emerald kingdom to the dusty backdoor of the Sacramento Valley, would be easy to block.
If only that were our only road. Or we didn’t have any airfields. Or a port.
What I was really contemplating was Donald Trump moving red-state troops into Chicago. Maybe Illinois can block their roads and at least make the confederate guard cause a spectacle with some property damage before surrendering the windy city to assorted clerks and insurance workers for what? —military rule? supervision?
theatrics.
This is a propaganda war. The end product of the invasion is the fear you feel.
There is no escaping Trump. Even without roads and airports, we cannot keep the enemy from within, without. He occupies letters to the editor and city council seats, blog commentary and broadcast news. We have to face him, like Governors Pritzker and Newsom are doing.
The study of political thought is a lifetime pursuit. A local blog caters to regulars who together form a sort of a political Star Wars bar of disparate ideologies. Diehard liberals, deep thinkers, garden variety ideologues, angry rednecks — all are welcome in the name of free speech. Philosophies and lies abound.
Our country has become one big intramural scrimmage over self-defeating arguments. Comment sections illustrate the national divide.
The slyest and most destructive trolls present themselves as liberal influencers. They constantly pitch the anarchistic idea that the Democratic Party is not liberal enough, and the answer to it all is to go down fighting for lost causes while democracy burns.
Joined by trolls who argue Only Losers Vote, the self-styled leftists preach third-party solutions while damning the system. These groups occupy heir own special world of anti-American propaganda, a country turned against itself.
To circle back, only 26% of voters self-identify as liberal. These are the people MAGA says have Trump Derangement Syndrome. These are the people conservatives say they own.
Ninety million people did not vote in 2024, but people of all persuasions do not want to own anyone or be owned. May recalcitrant non-voters see past ideas they do not endorse and move to save the mechanism of their own power as citizens. Immediately, please.
This is a hair-raising moment in American history. But it does not need to be a “hair on fire” moment. It is a back-to-basics moment. From a political organizing point of view, the answer is the same as always for the Democratic Party: a “get out the vote” drive.
If enough people had voted in 2024, we would not be in this place. Finding a cause or a candidate or a committee or a corner on the street and activating, getting uppity and taking charge, you will join a long line of democrats who fight for the equality of people.
Fend off those who denigrate the vote and those who would sacrifice your good for their idea of the perfect, and fight on.
Get out on Monday 9/1 and protest if you can. No need to blow a bridge. We have them outnumbered.

Well, I'm a little more left than liberal, I'm a Bernie person. But I must say, blowing a bridge that connects you to other parts of the country has a certain appeal. I understand the blue states attorneys general have daily meetings about a soft secession and what's going on in DC. Anyway, I'll keep it in mind, since secession is constantly on my mind, and I just don't have any friendly feelings to magas. The climate crisis is my big issue, and I feel that by denying it they are destroying our planet, and soon. I give us to 2050.
Mother Nature does a pretty good job taking out our roads. The huge slide on Highway 36 that is east of Swimmer’s Delight, was caused by earthquakes and killed one worker when trees from the slide fell on him.
